Smoky Mountains
Misty forest with coniferous trees in a mountainous area

Smoky Mountain Fir

Woody / EarthyFall, Winter, Holiday

The Smokies earn their name in the early morning, when the ridgelines disappear into a soft blue haze and the forest floor is still cold beneath the canopy. Fir and balsam dominate here the way they do in places that have never been tamed. The air is sharp at first, then it settles into something earthier and older. This is a forest that has been standing longer than anyone can remember, and it smells exactly like it.

Smoky Mountains

Smoky Mountains

The name comes from the mist that sits in the valleys most mornings, and when you're standing inside it, you understand why the mountains feel older than they look. The air is thick with fir and damp earth, the sharp green smell of trees growing close together. It takes your whole chest to breathe it in. The Smokies smell like somewhere that has been left mostly alone, and is better for it.
