By late afternoon, the mountains have decided what kind of day it is.
The light is going gold. The temperature has dropped without apology. Inside the lodge, someone has built a fire in the stone hearth, and the smell of it moves through every room. Woodsmoke and warmth and the particular comfort of a building that knows what the weather is doing and has made its plans accordingly.
There is nothing complicated about the smell of a fire in the mountains. It is exactly what it promises. Warm and woody and present in a way that asks you to stop moving and stay for a while.
Rocky Mountain Retreat holds that. The smell of the fire after the hike. The warmth inside when the air outside has gone blue and cold. The feeling of a place that makes the outside world feel optional.
